Trainer XP
What are Trainer Levels?
Trainer levels are a core component of the game and will affect your overall experience in seemingly small, but important ways.
Here are some things your trainer level impacts:
- Overall Pokémon XP gain
- Overall Catch Rate (unless the wild Pokémon is level 5 or lower)
- Areas you can access
- PC/Box Storage (+1 box per 5 levels)
- Access to the Brokerage (Level 10)
How to Level Up
The easiest way is to fill your Pokédex. Every new species you register gives trainer XP, and each new one gives more than the last.
Formula
New XP gain = previous XP gain + number of registered PokémonIn other words, your n-th registered species gives n × (n + 1) / 2 XP.Other ways to earn trainer XP
- Quests from NPCs all over the region reward trainer XP.
- Stronger wild Pokémon give 1 trainer XP when you faint one that has both a type advantage over your Pokémon and a higher level.
For example, if your level 5 Charmander faints a level 6 Geodude, you earn 1 trainer XP, because Charmander is weak against Rock-type Pokémon.
